Transnet Limited
Gold Sponsorship
Public Sector Visionary Category Sponsor

Transnet Limited (“Transnet”) is a transport and logistics company, wholly-owned by the Government of the Republic of South Africa. With approximately 48 000 full-time employees and about R140 billion in assets , Transnet is uniquely positioned to provide integrated, seamless transport solutions for its customers in the bulk and manufacturing sectors as part of its drive to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of the South African economy.

The company’s key role remains that of contributing to the lowering of the cost of doing business in South Africa and enabling economic growth through providing appropriate port, rail and pipeline infrastructure and operations in a cost-effective and efficient manner and within acceptable benchmark standards.

Transnet, which has invested R72 billion during the last five years on capital expenditure, is committed to investing R93,4 billion over the next five years on revitalising and extending its infrastructure (expanding and upgrading its ports, completing the construction of the new multi-product petroleum pipeline and buying hundreds of new locomotives) and addressing the maintenance backlog, especially at its rail freight division.

The company, which enjoys an investment-grade credit rating, is funding this ambitious infrastructure investment programme from a mix of its own cash resources and debt capital from a range of local and international credit market sources. This is being done off the strength of its balance sheet and without any government guarantees.

Transnet is made up of the following Operating Divisions:

• Transnet Freight Rail
Transnet Freight Rail (“TFR”) is Transnet’s biggest division accounting for about 50% of the company’s annual turnover with around 25000 employees. TFR transports bulk and containerised freight along its 20,824 kilometre rail network.

• Transnet National Ports Authority
Transnet National Ports Authority (“TNPA”) is the ports landlord division of Transnet and is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective economic functioning of the national ports system. The division, which manages eight ports, is also a provider of port infrastructure and marine service in all commercial ports.

• Transnet Port Terminals
Transnet Port Terminals (“TPT”) manages 15 cargo-terminal operations situated across seven South African commercial ports including the new container terminal at the port of Ngqura just outside Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. In addition to cargo handling, the division implements logistics management solutions for its container, bulk, break-bulk and car-terminal operations.

• Transnet Pipelines
Transnet Pipelines (“TPL”) transports a range of petroleum products and gas through 3000 kilometres of underground pipelines traversing five provinces ensuring the supply of petroleum products in the inland market especially South Africa’s economic  hub – Gauteng province.
The division is the beneficiary of Transnet’s single biggest capital investment project – the new Multi-Product Pipeline which will replace the current Durban to Johannesburg Pipeline (“DJP”).

• Transnet Rail Engineering
Transnet Rail Engineering (“TRE”) is mainly focused on in-service maintenance, repair, upgrade, conversion and manufacturing of freight wagons, mainline and suburban coaches, diesel and electric locomotives as well as wheels, rotating machines, rolling stock equipment, castings auxiliary equipment and services.
While the division is largely focused on supporting TFR, management is implementing various strategies to grow its external revenue in and around South Africa.

The five operating divisions are supported by the following specialist units: Transnet Capital Projects, Transnet Property and Transnet Foundation.
Since 2004, Transnet has been led by a board of experienced, independent and non-executive directors (only two members of the board are executives – the Group Chief Executive and the Chief Financial Officer). Currently, it is chaired (on an acting basis) by the renowned accounting academic and corporate governance expert, Prof Geoffrey Everingham. The Acting Group Chief Executive is Mr. Chris Wells, a respected director of companies.
