In all cases, BBQ is looking for organisations that have attained considerable and measurable achievement. Judges look for clear and concise applications and use of examples to demonstrate how the nominee meets the criteria of the category.

You may support your nomination through the inclusion of figures, statistics and testimonials. It is important that you give as much detail as possible about what your organisation has achieved and what makes it stand out against others.

Tips & Information
  • Use examples to motivate and substantiate your claims
  • You may enter more than one category but this must be on separate nomination forms
  • Self-nomination is acceptable
  • To assist the judges, have your nomination form typed
  • Nomination forms will not be returned or feedback given
  • The judges’ decisions are fi nal and there will be no feedback or correspondence
  • Only short-listed nominees will be contacted
  • No late entries will be considered (closing date 8 September 2010)
Selection Criteria:
The 2010 Van Ryn’s BBQ Awards criteria have been put together by using the B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice as guidelines and edited by the Department of Trade and Industries BEE Unit.

Best Established Black Business Award

For the organisation that is a role model in the following areas:
  • Must have an annual turnover of more than R35 million
  • Must be more than 50% black owned
  • Must have been operational for at least three years, be profi table and have an established client base/service and contributing towards overall transformation in all spheres of the company structure.
  • Must clearly demonstrate its contribution to the skills development of its employees
  • Must show active involvement of black participants in executive decision-making
  • Must show how the company has contributed towards enterprise development
  • Must demonstrate its involvement in socio-economic development initiatives, projects or programmes
  • Must stand out from other businesses in ability to implement a sound vision for the future.
  • Must utilise business practices that empower staff  and communities
  • Adherence to good corporate governance and leadership is vital
  • Must demonstrate leadership in transformation

Best Established SMME Award

For the SMME organisation that exhibits accomplishments in the following criteria:
  • Annual turnover needs to be between R5 million and  R35 million
  • Must be more than 50% black owned
  • Needs to have been operational for at least three years, be profi table and have an established client base/service and contributing towards overall transformation in all spheres of the company structure
  • Must demonstrate its contribution to skills development of its employees
  • Must show  active involvement of black participants in executive decision-making
  • Has contributed to enterprise development
  • Must demonstrate its involvement in socio-economic development initiatives, projects or programmes
  • Innovative and strategic vision and business excellence
  • Must stand out from other businesses in ability to implement a vision, strategise for the future and integrate a better business practice through empowerment of staff  and communities
  • Growth in terms of turnover, job creation and profi tability (benchmark)
  • Must demonstrate leadership in transformation

Organisations operating within a competitive industry and who demonstrate factors of sustainable economic growth and development will have an advantage. Adherence to good corporate governance and leadership is vital

New and Innovative Business Award

For a business established in the last 36 months and judged on the following:
  • Must have an annual turnover of  less than R5 million
  • Must be more than 50 % black owned
  • Must have been operational for at least one and a half years and be profi table with an established client base
  • Show a commitment to innovation and technological advancement through the development of a product or service. If the service is copyrighted or patented, the nominee will need to hold the patent or copyright on the product or service

Companies operating within a competitive industry and who demonstrate factors of sustainable economic growth and development will have an advantage. Innovation in a relatively unknown or untapped industry would greatly boost the possibility of winning. Adherence to good corporate governance and leadership is vital.

CSI Award

The organisation, over the last 12 months, must have shown evidence of social responsibility in the following areas:
  • Must be more than 50 % black owned
  • Must demonstrate its involvement in socio-economic development initiatives, projects or programmes in education, community development, job creation and skills development. The entity must demonstrate that it has made a life-changing impact on its benefi ciaries which has allowed them to either acquire a skill or become
  • self sustainable
  • Must recognise the importance of contributing to public and community development and  the stability of our nation
  • Must demonstrate its percentage towards CSI contribution. It must also demonstrate that at least 85% of the monetary contributions were utilised to benefi t the intended beneficiaries

New Entrepreneur Award

The newly established business must have made outstanding progress over the last 18 months in the following areas:
  • Involvement in the career/professional growth of employees
  • Must be more than 50 % black owned
  • Involvement in socio-economic development initiatives, projects  or programmes
  • Exhibiting originality, innovative vision and business leadership
  • Demonstrate perseverance, endurance and accountability
  • Demonstrate entrepreneurial skill and flair as well as a strong track record for creating jobs
  • Be a catalyst for economic development and growth through projects and enterprises
  • Must demonstrate leadership in transformation

Businesswoman of the Year AND Businessman of the Year

The winners of these awards will be well-established as executives and will be judged in the following areas:
  • Must demonstrate leadership skills towards enterprise development through increased profi tability or strategic growth of the company
  • He and she will have proven themselves by carving a niche in their industry. Must have established a proven record of achievement and hold an exceptional track record  in management of staff
  • Empowered, mentored and been a role model to the youth, disabled and disadvantaged individuals while demonstrating leadership skills in socio-economic development initiatives, projects or programmes through participation in a recognised society, community project or charity
  • Carry and uphold an inspirational vision and go beyond the call of duty  in implementing their vision

  • Young, dynamic, innovative businesswoman or man
  • Achieved excellence in the last two years in industry or commerce
  • Shown exceptional vision and insight for the youth
  • Exhibited exceptional leadership and business skills
  • Believe in empowerment and being a role model for the youth

Public Sector Visionary Award

For the man or woman in the public service who diligently strives to ensure high service delivery levels, judged on the following:
  • Involvement in the career/professional growth of employees
  • Demonstrates leadership skills in job creation
  • Involvement in socio-economic development initiatives, projects or programmes
  • Open and transparent attitude towards public service governance – they must be an exemplary role model and show strong characteristics as a leader of change
  • Must have a track record of excellence that has positively impacted South Africa

Community Builder of the Year Award

This award acknowledges the man or woman who has made a significant impact in communities and will be judged on the following:

  • Must show commitment to community development through innovation, creativity, integrity, a proven record of achievement and involvement, leadership, perseverance and endurance
  • Have a minimum of three years of active involvement in community building
  • Must show commitment to community development through the improvement of the quality of life in communities in areas such as education, health, sport and recreation, environment, job creation, skills development and crime prevention
  • Inspire and encourage others to follow the example in community building
  • Establishes a sustainable method for ongoing community projects
  • Increases the depth and scope of volunteerism by building the capacity to manage and retain volunteers
  • Be an active leader in his or her community who has made a positive difference in areas such as human rights, multiculturalism and community-building

This Award is given to one of the winners who:

  • Shows proven leadership ability in bridging the gap between business and commerce

  • Leads by example and is able to turn the company around through innovative and inspiring vision
  • Has a track record of profi table trading and acquisition
  • Never gives up, overcomes obstacles and setbacks, persists against all odds
  • Demonstrates unfailing strength, inspiration and motivation
  • Must have broken barriers, gained new ground, established and set higher standards
  • Must be a strong leader and an exceptional visionary in leading staff, peers and the general public to a brighter future for our country

In order to qualify for nomination individuals and companies must provide sufficient relevant evidence to prove their claim such as:  References, case studies, clear examples and recorded evidence of projects, numerical data to support items such as BEE profiles and staff quotas, proof of social responsibility programmes, and any other data that will support the application.
