The Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC) is a long-established broad-based black economic empowerment player with a strong balance sheet and a solid track record. It was one of the early entrants in the BEE arena 11 years ago and its financial skills have been used not only to grow its investments but also to put the benfits back into society through distributions to its 100% shareholder, the Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT).

MIC does not make passive investments. It is an active equity partner, playing a hands-on role in its investments and bringing the relevant internal financial and economic skills to its involvement in these companies. MIC is therefore not a shadow partner in its investments, but becomes a trusted advisor to management. Together with management it transforms and grows the businesses.

Looking beyond its commitment to the Mineworkers Investment Trust, MIC has consistently sought to identify investment and related opportunities that can make a difference to the lives of working South Africans. MIC has consequently pursued opportunities with the potential to impact positively on society, over and above their potential to provide good investment returns.

These include initiatives such as workplace retailing, diamond polishing and beneficiation as well as vehicle tracking and crime prevention. MIC was one of the first South African investment companies to fully grasp the financial potential of organisational and business transformation.

MIC's pioneering participation in the management of the companies it invested in pre-empted a national shift away from 'arms length' empowerment deals and towards the authentic transformation of companies. MIC has thus been a key player in South Africa's BEE environment and has been instrumental in developing a broad-based BEE model that delivers meaningful economic empowerment and fundamental business value to all stakeholders.

The company's impressive history of best-practice BEE transactions is testament to its vision in a sphere of business that is often fraught with ideological and practical complexity.

New and Innovative Business 2009

Transnet Rail Engineering

BBQ_New_and_Innovative_Business_-Transnet-Mduduzi_NxasanaKeneilwe_RapudungoaneTransnet Rail Engineering has established itself as the major provider of services in the South African market for maintenance, repair, refurbishment, conversion, repair, and new build of locomotives, wagons and coaches.

Rail engineering is the main supplier of these services to its sister company Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), the only domestic main-line railway operator. This industry leadership position has been achieved through the leveraging of core competencies and strategically positioned factories and maintenance facilities alongside the key transport corridors. TRE currently has close to 100% share of all TFR business for wagon and locomotive products and services.

Performance highlights for 2008/09 include: Revenue up 0,9% to R8,2 billion; Ebitda down 36% to R764 million; Capex down 26% to R568 million; Improving availability and reliability of rolling stock; Historical unveiling of proudly Transnet diesel locomotive, Class 39-200 built in Koedoespoort; Producing 10M5 train sets and Business Express for Prasa; Producing Kei Rail coaches for the Eastern Cape Government; Launch of the new School of Rail Engineering.

The external revenue of TRE reflected an increase of 33% to R1.4 billion mainly due to the increased number of coach upgrades conducted for Prasa. Ebitda for the year fell due to the decrease in backlog maintenance and lower margins from TFR.

The focus of the last three years – during which R6 billion was spent on maintenance – is yielding the desired fruit. Availability of locomotives and wagons have improved. For example locomotive availability improved in the GFB to 88% (2008: 86%); in the coal line it rose to 90% (2008: 89%); and in the iron ore line it remained at 86% (2008: 86%).
